Best free AI prompts for students and job seekers
By Siva Sankar · Updated October 2026
Free AI chat tools like ChatGPT and Gemini can be a patient tutor, a practice interviewer and an editor, if you ask well. Below are prompts you can copy, fill in the brackets and use today. One rule first: use AI to understand and practise, not to submit work you don't understand. Teachers and interviewers can tell, and you lose the learning.
How to write a good prompt
Good prompts give four things: who the AI should act as, your situation, the exact task and the format you want. "Explain photosynthesis" gets a generic answer. "Act as a Class 10 biology teacher. Explain photosynthesis in simple English with an Indian example, then give me 5 MCQs" gets a useful one.
Prompts for studying
- Explain simply: "Explain [topic] as if I'm in [class/year]. Use one everyday Indian example. Then list the 3 points most likely to be asked in exams."
- Check my understanding: "I'll explain [topic] in my own words. Point out anything wrong or missing, gently, and don't rewrite it for me: [your explanation]."
- Practice quiz: "Give me 10 MCQs on [chapter] for [board/exam]. Don't show answers until I reply with mine, then explain each one I got wrong."
- Study plan: "I have [number] days until my [exam]. Subjects: [list]. I can study [hours] a day. Make a day-by-day plan with revision days and one rest day a week."
- Flashcards: "Turn these notes into 15 question-and-answer flashcards: [paste notes]."
- In my language: "Explain [topic] in simple Hindi (or Tamil, Telugu…) and keep technical terms in English."
Prompts for government and competitive exams
- "Make a 30-day current affairs revision plan for [exam], covering the main topic areas usually asked."
- "Give me 5 previous-year-style reasoning questions on [topic], with step-by-step solutions and a shortcut if there is one."
- "I keep confusing [concept A] and [concept B]. Make a comparison table with examples."
Always cross-check facts, dates and current affairs with official sources or your textbook. AI tools can sound confident and still be wrong.
Prompts for resumes
- Bullet improver: "Rewrite these resume points to start with action verbs and show results. Don't invent numbers; ask me for them if needed: [points]."
- Match a job: "Here is a job description: [paste]. Here is my resume: [paste]. List the skills the job wants that my resume doesn't show, and suggest honest ways to present what I've actually done."
- Fresher summary: "Write 3 versions of a 2-line resume summary for a fresher with [degree] and skills [list], applying for [role]."
- Cover letter: "Write a short, polite cover letter for [role] at [company], using my resume points below. Keep it under 200 words and avoid clichés."
Prompts for interview practice
- Mock interview: "Act as an interviewer for a [role] at an Indian [IT/bank/startup] company. Ask me one question at a time. After each answer, give feedback and a better sample answer."
- Tell me about yourself: "Help me build a 60-second 'tell me about yourself' answer from these facts: [education, projects, internship, goal]."
- HR questions: "Give me sample answers to 'Why should we hire you?', 'What are your weaknesses?' and 'Where do you see yourself in 5 years?' for a fresher. Keep them honest and natural."
- Salary talk: "Explain the difference between CTC and in-hand salary in India, then give me a polite script to ask about the salary breakup."
Prompts for everyday productivity
- "Turn this long email into a polite, short reply in professional English: [paste]."
- "Summarise this article in 5 bullet points and list 2 questions I should think about: [paste]."
- "I'm procrastinating on [task]. Break it into 15-minute steps I can start right now."
Use AI safely
- Don't paste your Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or passwords into any chatbot.
- Check your college or exam rules on AI use.
- Verify facts, formulas and dates before relying on them.
- Edit the output so it sounds like you. Recruiters notice copied, robotic text.
